The Advanced Web Architecture Laboratory performs research and dissemination activities on the basic technical elements in web architecture, for example: its use in epub and correspondence towards writing from top to bottom for properly handling Japanese culture; its application to hybrid broadcasts and TV terminals that are application examples of web browser technology other than computers; promulgation of digital signage as a platform. Along with this, the Advanced Web Architecture Laboratory will promote research on new architecture through industry-university collaboration systems in order to link physical space with cyberspace represented by WoT.

ECHONET is a communication protocol designed to create the “smart houses” of the future. Today, with Wi-Fi and other wireless networks readily available in ordinary homes, there is a growing demand for air-conditioning, lighting and other equipment inside the home to be controlled using smartphones or controllers, or for electricity usage to be monitored in order to avoid wasting energy.
Internet technologies are making a transition from an era of deployment and high speed to one of qualitative evolution. The realization of a diverse range of environments enabling correspondence in a variety of forms and situations is rapidly becoming a reality. Meanwhile, a more reliable social infrastructure, one that has its roots deep in our every day lives, is in demand more than ever. The goal of WIDE Project is the construction of a “Dependable Internet”, one that can be used by people from all walks of life in any situation with a sense of security. This enormous challenge cannot be taken on alone, but will require cooperation in research and development on a global scale. This is exactly where the significance of the information technology research network lies.
